Pore-water pressure distribution of a solid-water phase flow, that is difficult to measure in an open channel, was measured in a rolling mill. The result confirmed that pore-water pressure was higher than the hydrostatic pressure supposed to exist so far.<br>Theoretically, the gradient of excess pore-water pressure from hydrostatic pressure, dpf /dy, is proportional to the square of the particle diameter, d, and is known as Reynolds stress. The results of the experiments were consistent with the above theory in characteristics and value for large d, but not for small d. The difference between theory and the results of experiments for small d was caused by infiltration flow which occurred due to the characteristics of the rolling mill. In this case, the dpf /dy was inversely proportional to the square of d based on Darcy's law.
