Description
Calyptogena, DALL, 1891. Type species: C. pacifica DALL, 1891.<BR>The superficial feature of Calyptogena reminds me of some species of the Veneridae, however, considering form the standpoints of hinge teeth and pallial line, the present genus is dealt with Carditidae. This geuus is one of the Nothern Pacific elements. C. pacifica DALL and C. elongata DALL are known from the rather deep water of the Western Coast of Alaska and California, and the fossil species of the former is also known from the Pliocene formation of Los Angels. In the Japanese Islands the present genus has never been known as the living species, however, two species of Calyptogena are roported as the fossil oiies. One is C. paciftca DALL which is noted by Y. OTUKA from the Wakimoto Bed of Oga Peninsula, Akita Prefecture ;anotherone is C. nipponica OINOMIKADO and KANEHAKA from the Usiakuhi Bed (Pliocene) and Kubiki Bed (Mio.-Pliocene) of the Higasiyama Oil-field, Niigata Prefecture. In this article the writer reported the occurrence of a great number of Calyptogena pacifica PALL from the Antral. Bed (Mio.-Pliocene) of the Isikari Oil-field, Hokkaido. Unio moraiensis SuzUKI perhaps will belong to the present one.
