Abstract

Color patches were printed in offset lithography using deep-etched plate, and the colors were measured by spectrophotometer. The measured values were arranged in a tridimensional space formed on the axis of the chromaticity coordinates x and y and the Munsell value of VY.
It was observed that the sample colors of 73 in all were formed a hexahedron in this space, and that the six faces of this hexahedron clearly defined the limit of the reproduced color gamut.
From the observation and analysis of this color space, it is known that the colors produced by halftone process can de treated as a vector field.
Using this tridimensional system, one can easyily illustrate and predict secondary colors (over print of two primary colors) and tertially color (overprint of three primary colors).
The study of this hexahedron of colors reveals the theoretical significance of the black printer and the tint color printers that supplement primary colors.
Also, such a study provides instructions concerning to the selection of primary that can be used in printing reproductions.
