Abstract

In this article, we describe the status of using an auditory two-dimensional symbol system (auditory code) by local governments in 2014 and by central governments and prefecture administrations in 2015. We also analyze the accessibility of printed materials with auditory code returned from them. The auditory code can be easily generated from the original text by using encoding software, and the auditory presentation equipment can decode and read the original text using text-to-speech technologies. We hope that this universally designed communication system will be used more openly to help people who are elderly, blind, visually impaired, or dyslexic, as well as those who do not speak or read Japanese.
