Description

A new emulsification method was established using liquid crystals formed at Oil/Water interface and adhesion of the emulsion droplets to hair was noted. In this method, a dispersed phase (Oil phase) containing Oleic Acid (OA) is added to water containing N-Lauryl-N, N-dimethyl-Betain (LB) with stirring. Liquid crystals comprised of water, oil and a complex formed by statistic bonding between OA in oil and LB in water were produced at the Oil/Water interface. Each emulsion droplet was surrounded by a liquid crystal. A gel-like emulsion prepared by this method showed greater adhesion to hair compared to LB. Fluorescence spectrum and adhesion data indicated emulsion droplets surrounded by liquid crystals to be more hydrohobic and have affinity not only toward each other but hair as well.
