Abstract
In this paper, a series of computer analysis is performed by using the finite element method on the local and overall buckling strength of a bottom structure of an oil tanker, where a special attention is paid to examine the buckling strength of a tripping bracket as well as its supporting effect on the lateral instability of the bottom transverse.<BR>Structural model tests are also carried out to comfirm the theoretical findings from the analysis on a suitable size and reinforcement arrangement of the tripping brackets. The results of the analysis have revealed a fact that the safety facter against buckling of the bottom transverse is over 3.7 under structural tank test condition. It is also found that the effect of rigidity of web stiffeners is significant on the lateral instability of the bottom transverses.
