Description

Recently, a conception of “Total System” has become popular, which is a very useful technique to predict extreme values of ship motion, bending moment or other items of seaworthiness in confused seas. The system generally consists of two processes, one is to analyze ship motion and get response functions of items of seaworthiness among regular waves, and another is to perform statistical analysis on given response functions, and get short term and long term predictions in confused seas.
We developed “Total System of Analysis on the Longitudinal Strength of Ships” as one of such systems, and have devoted our efforts on investigating about ship's longitudinal strength using this system.
In this paper, we report these results examined on the six components of forces and moments induced by waves such as wave shearing force, wave bending moment and so on, based on the calculation performed on a number of existing ships. And for the convenience of initial desing of ship's longitudinal strength, we give brief expressions about six components of forces and moments induced by waves.
