Description

In this monograph, the present writer surveyed the athletic clubs belonging to the student association of the each middle school in Hiroshima prefecture in the Meiji Period, and considered the characteristics of them, having in mind the comparison between these and those of the Higher schools in general. Some of findings are as follows. It is true that there was considerable similarity between those and others; that in both cases, the athletic clubs had the dominant position in the student association they belonged, and both of them, as their major sports, played such same kind of sports as base-ball, rowing, Judo and Kendo. Nevertheless, fundamental differences were there. The clubs of the middle schools were not voluntarily organized by the student themselves, but were organized and sponsored by the school authorities, and that was not the cases in the higher schools. And on the part of the school authorities, they had kept the policy to encourage and promote the athlettic club activi-ties until the early 30's of the Meiji, but after that they abondoned this policy and went to regulate them. Adding to this, a general trend critical to the athletic activities, which was prevalent in the several years at the end of the Meiji Period, subtly influenced the athle-tic club activities in the middle schools also in the Hiroshima prefecture.
