Description

Shuji Isawa went to the United States of America in 1875 and studied there in the Bridgwater State Teachers College, Massachuseffs. Graduated from the college in 1877, he entered the Harvard University to proceed his study in October in the same year, and came back to Japan in May, 1878. Having his job in the Ministry of Educatin in September, 1879, he became a member of the Gymnastic Research Section newly founded there, and worked out a plan of physical education generally known as Shuji Isawa's plan of Physical Education in the Gymnastic Institute. In this plan the following facts can be clearly seen. 1. His gymnastic plan has something common with the music educational plan which he sent to the Educational Department when staying in the United States. For example, a) Any method or system of Physical education in America should not be adopted as it is, but should be properly modified to be suited to the Japanese educational system. b) Any suitable method should be first examined by putting it into practice either in the Tokyo normal School or in the Tokyo Women's normal School. 2. He was quite eager to discuss in detail how and how far the gymnastic System in America should be adopted and modified in Japan. Especially he emphasises to found the Gymnastic Institute.
