Viscosities of three montmorillonite samples purified from bentonites by sedimentation method were examined in this study. They (Yamagata, Wyoming, and Gujarat) were mainly consisted of montmorillonite with a little amount of soluble salt (NaCl or Na2SO4). Viscosity of three samples from different localities, Yamagata, Wyoming and Gujarat, changed with desalting by isopropanol solution treatment and shows in different tendency as follows. The viscosity of suspension increased for the sample from Yamagata, and almost did not change or decrease slightly for the sample from Wyoming. For the sample from Gujarat, the viscosity of suspension decreased remarkably.

Consequently, the changes in viscosity with desalting depend on the modes of particle association, proposed by Olphen. Also, aspect ratio of montmorillonite particle determine the modes of particle association in suspension.

The sample from Yamagata with large aspect ratio, formed face-to-face association, and delamination of particles (tactoids) with desalting increased viscosity. In this study, it is concluded that the change of viscosity in montmorillonite samples caused by the modes of particle association in suspension and, is significantly related to the aspect ratio.
