Abstract

Lattice images of a polytype of sericite were observed by a high resolution electron microscope with a tilting apparatus. The sericite specimen used in this study was collected from the alteration zone of a Kuroko deposit. The polytype identified from the x-ray pattern was 2M1.<BR>Two types of two dimensional lattice images are observed in the plane which contains the [001] and [110] directions. The one consists of a periodicity of about 20Å parallel to the [001] direction and that of about 5.3Å crossing it with an angle of about 86°, and the other has 20Å and 4.5Å periodicities crossing mutually with an angle of about 60°. These lattice images correspond to the projection of the 2M1 structure on the plane containing the [001] and [110] directions.
