1. A synthesis of DL-proline from diethyl nitromalonate and acrolein by intramolecular reductive alkylation is described.<BR>2. A new method for preparation of the dimethyl acetal of glutamic-γ-semialdehyde from the same starting materials in an over-all yield of 38% (based on diethyl nitromalonate) is also presented.
