Abstract

Color can be said to have two faces. We perceive the light that an object reflects as a color. That is why color is called a psychophysical quantity. On the other hand, the coloring material exhibits various changes resulting from the absorption of light. Color science is the study of reflected light which, through human sensation, acts as a driving force for economic activity, whereas colorant chemistry takes into account studies of light absorption and color generation as well as weathering resistance and thermal characteristics. The color design industry developed from both of these important and related concepts.<br>Here, using a ruby red as an example, we explain how high quality colors for automotives can be designed, and how that design itself becomes a commercial product through its application to the vehicle.
