Abstract

When our visual perception of reality differs from the physical reality, it is called a visual illusion. We discuss various visual illusions observed in daily life from the viewpoint of visual psychology. Some areas of culture, such as clothing and cosmetics (makeup), take advantage of visual illusions so as to make the human body and face look more attractive. We review some quantitative studies on visual illusions induced by makeup and clothing. Other illusions considered in this article include the bicolor illusion, size contrast illusion, and amodal completion illusion in clothes and the Delboeuf illusion in some merchandize.
