Description
Of four hundred titles which have been scanned periodically for the International Nuclear Information System, nineteen titles (or seventeen pub-lishers) have their own rules of keyword assignment. The rules have been introduced within the last ten years. The set of keywords for a piece of literature is selected by the author and checked by editors. The keywords are assigned in free terms to four-fifths of the titles and in controlled terms to one fifth. Two-thirds of the titles aim at making use of the keywords for the subject analysis in secondary information processing. These facts indicate that the importance of the assignment is recognized with development of machine literature-search. On an analysis of the results obtained and an experience in the use of the keywords to INIS indexing, guidelines are proposed for introduction of free-term assignment rules to scientific documents which need effective information transfer.
