Abstract
After the development of molding technology and many kinds of reinforced materials that make up plastic -based composite materials (FRP), many plastic materials have been put to practical use as light-weight structural materials. So it is no exaggeration to say that the expansion of applications of FRP structures with excellent corrosion resistance and light-weight properties has largely been brought about by advances in adhesives and bonding technology of plastic-based materials.
Due to big changes in light-weight structures with the development of FRP, various bonding methods and systems for complicated shapes have been developed for many types of adhesives. Mechanical joining, such as point riveting by rivets or bolts, is universal for the joining of steel materials. However, adhesive joints which bond FRP surfaces can provide excellent stress relaxation and an even distribution of the joint stress of bonded parts.
The present article reviews the current status and trends in adhesive bonding techniques which have changed with the development of FRP and the differences between steel and plastic-based structural bonding systems.
