説明

The origin of non-radial diffuse streak patterns in X-ray and electron diffraction is clarified on the basis of the theory of thermal diffuse scattering. It is shown that in certain types of crystals transverse acoustic waves have predominantly low frequencies in the case where their wave vectors lie in the planes perpendicular to linear or zigzag atomic chains characteristic of those crystals and give rise to strong thermal diffuse scattering which extends into sheets perpendicular to the chain directions. All the main features of the diffuse streak patterns observed with various types of crystals such as germanium, white tin, hexagonal ice, adipic acid and urea are satisfactorily explained.
