Abstract

An axisymmetric mirror was stabilized by adding an internal hoop with reversed magnetic moment on the midplane, keeping the axisymmetry. This averaged minimum-B stabilization effect was assured by improvement of plasma confinement time through measurement of decay time of ion saturation current, reduction of plasma diffusion through profile measurement of plasma pressure and suppression of large fluctuations appearing in probe current and floating potential. The profile of fluctuation agreed with theoretical stability estimation. The fluctuations were identified as that of the flute-type by spatial correlation measurements.
