The properties of the energy spectrum of a quantum system with Hamiltonian
H=1⁄2(p12+p22)+α⁄4(aq14+2Cq12q22+bq24)
are investigated numerically in connection with its classical behavior which changes from regular to strongly chaotic on changing the parameter C from 0 to 10. We showed that a large number of avoided crossings do not necessarily mean quantum mechanical chaotic behavior, but the presence of large regions where avoided crossings take place do mean it. The difference of the properties of avoided crossings in regular and chaotic regions and the physical meaning of second order difference of energy levels are discussed.
