Deformation of Large Copper Whiskers

Abstract

Copper whiskers of [100], [110] and [111] orientation in the diameter (d) range of 30–400 microns are tested in tension. The deformation characteristics of these whiskers are found to be between fine whisker (d<30 microns) and bulk single crystal behaviour. Even though there is no conspicuous yield drop, the maximum flow stress reached in some orientations is comparable to the yield stresses observed in fine whiskers. The yield strength decreases with increasing diameter.
