The existence of a mechanism for parametric excitation in a plasma located in an oscillating electric field is shown. The parametric excitation recently predicted by Silin occurs owing to coupling of motions of the electrons with those of the ions; if the motions of the ions are neglected, it cannot occur in an uniform plasma. The type of parametric excitation pointed out in the present paper is based on the gradient of the density. Motions of the electrons interact with themselves if the gradient of the density exists; thereby parametric excitation occurs even if motions of the ions are neglected. In actual plasmas the mechanism of excitation based on the density gradient prevails over that predicted by Silin, because the electron-ion mass ratio is very small.
