説明

A linear theory of collision induced instability of partially ionized gases is developed for waves propagating along an external magnetic field. Transverse waves are treated. The effect of finite wave numbers is fully taken into account.
The unperturbed velocity distribution of electrons, f0, is assumed to have a sufficiently large peak:
(Remark: Graphics omitted.)
and the electron collision frequency ν is assumed to depend strongly on the magnitude of electron velocity:
(Remark: Graphics omitted.)
where ν′=dνdv.
A dispersion relation is obtained and solved numerically. Four high frequency modes are obtained. The first three modes are identified with the waves in the cold Plasma, namely, two electromagnetic modes and one Alfven mode. The fourth mode will not appear when the velocity dependence of the collision frequency ν(v) is not explicitly taken into account. When h>3, the last mode is unstable for small k but it represents damping wave for large k.
