A recent publication by Okazaki et al. [J. Phys. Soc. Japan 21 (1966) 199] prompted attempts to verify the existence of the compound LiF·Fe2O3. Firings of stoichiometric amounts of LiF and α-Fe2O3 were carried out in air, dry nitrogen and oxygen using a Stanton thermobalance. It was concluded that in dry oxygen no reaction took place, in dry nitrogen a small amount of magnetite was formed and in air hydrolysis by atmospheric moisture resulted in a substantial amount of lithium ferrite. No evidence for the formation of a compound between LiF and Fe2O3 was forthcoming, and an alternative explanation of magnetic measurements by Okazaki et al., on the basis of solid solutions with lithium ferrite rather than with LiF·Fe2O3, was presented.
