Description

"SIST 02 Description of Bibliographic References" was laid down as rule based on the Description of Bibliographic Information which was released in 1975. Since then it was revised several times over to meet environmental changes and then to omit the description for secondary materials, or to change in depth of description required. This paper briefs the history of 25 years since the standard was launched, and also gives some consideration on role of references and significance of standardization. Last fall "SIST 02-supple. Description of Bibliographic References for digital sources(a draft)" was released. The author describes this new development and discusses several problems associated with it.
