Abstract
A free newspaper appears in Japan and it will become too much for 70 years. Its' advertising market size takes rank with the magazine, and the free newspaper has merged into the life completely now. However, an understanding and research on the free paper such as the feature of media, social position, etc hasn't made much progress. Then, in order to explore the social meaning and cultural value, I tried to overview from the side of 10 of "mechanism of free", "definition", "feature of media", "history", "classification", "circulation", "advertising market size", "latest trend", "regional contribution", and "problem and future" on the theme of "What is the newsfree paper?". The free paper which exists as "the closest media to consumers" and "a core of local media" has a cultural value collected and saved for a long time.
