Abstract

Japan Electronic Messaging Association (JEMA) commissioned its first nation-wide Electronic Mail User Survey in 1994 to investigate the use of the technology in Japanese companies and organizations operating in Japan. The survey was distributed to institutions including companies employing more than 500 workers and major communications service providers. Two thousand six hundred fourteen companies responded resulting in 32.6 percent return rate. The third annual survey, conducted in November 1996, profiled users of e-mail, and this report overviews the current trends of e-mail in Japan. The survey results highlighted: 1) this was the first year that more than fifty percent of the respondents implemented e-mail networks; 2) e-mail was available to only a small group of employees; 3) increase in e-mail exchanges with overseas and domestic business partners, and diverse use of e-mail within the enterprise; 4) Internet use grew in exchanges with overseas and domestic business partners ;5) increased groupware and WWW browser software use.
