Abstract

What and how should we select among great volumes of information for archival preservation or destruction? Archival institutions and archivists have appraised archival records which organizations created as the evidences of their activities. This article first introduces appraisal theories of Theodore R. Schellenberg and Hans Booms. Next, it overviews "macro-appraisal" theory. It also considers the records continuum, a potential new paradigm for records management and archival administration, the DIRKS, a practical methodology into which the records continuum is converted, and ISO 15489. Furthermore, it discusses fundamental concepts for appraisal of records and information in present-day society where organizations should be accountable and transparent for their activities.
