Abstract
A questionnaire survey has been made of 600 salaried men, aged over 19, living in Kôzôji new town, Kasugai-shi, Aichi-ken. A statistical analysis has been performed to find out the salaried men's consciousness and behavior toward clothing. The following facts have been found.
(1) For salaried men who work mainly in the office, clothing has an important significance as the means by which they might gain companionship of their group, public trust and good feeling rather than express their individuality. The style of a businesss suit and necktie is favored and widely accepted as their regular working uniform.
(2) Based on the patterns of the response to fashion and norm consciousness, the data can be divided into five main types by the quantification theory III.
(3) The differences among these types are defined by age, occupation, position held, interest in life, how to spend leisure and regulation of clothings in the office.
