Abstract
In this study, we examined the amount of needle penetration in blind stitch sewing in view of the sewing condition and fabric properties. Using a model concerning the blind stitch forming, we considered the information on the setting of sewing condition. The distribution of the amount of needle penetration could be approximated by the normal distribution and showed a tendency to increase its variance with the increase of porosity percentage of fabrics. The multiple regression analysis of the average amount of needle penetration showed that the length penetrated in fabrics were influenced by the height of ridge forming disc, the fabric thickness, the sewing speed, the weight and the flexural rigidity of fabrics and other factors. The perfect blind stitches were formed in a specific range of the needle penetration/the fabric thickness. The average amount of needle penetration could be roughly presumed using the height of ridge forming disc h, the distance between the needle tip and the ridge forming disc λ and fabric thickness TM, introducing a term, (TM-λ) ⋅hn. The index number n is a real number more than 1 and has the function which corrects the influence of h in the term, (TM-λ) ⋅hn
