Abstract

The purpose of this study was to obtain fundamental guidelines for designing visually aesthetic, vertically striped legwear, which makes legs appear longer, slimmer, and more aesthetic. In the present study we examined visual impressions of vertical, equal-striped legwear varied by stripe width, color combinations, and shape of women's lower extremities such as aesthetic legs (long, thin, well-proportioned, straight legs) and not thin legs (thick, heavy legs) . Thirty undergraduates volunteered in the visual sensory test by semantic-differential (SD) method as subjects. Images of legs were designed by the three-dimensional (3-D) modeling system and were displayed on the projector. The authors found that the legwear with narrow black-white stripes patterns made legs seem visually more slender, longer and more aesthetic. Cool color combinations also made legs appear longer and more slender, especially in the case of aesthetic legs. Furthermore, they found that bell-shaped and X-shaped garments, A-line skirts and dresses created good-looking outfits and combined well with vertical striped legwear. Good matching color combinations for the legwear, were garments that were neutral, monochromatic, cool, and accented neutral color schemes.
