Description

Twelve types of Ag-Pd-Cu-Zn alloys consisting of a fixed 20% (weight percent, hereinafter the same) of palladium, 5, 10, 15 and 20% of copper, 0, 5 and 10% of zinc and the residual quantity of silver were melted and after percarming fosting in accordance with the dental precision casting method, the tensile strength, elongation, Vickers hardness and the tarnishing after immersion into 0.1% Na2S solution (37℃, 3 days)were examined by using a heat treated specimens. In the microstructure of castings of alloys containing 5 to 10% zinc and 10 to 20% copper, practically no casting defaults were found and deoxidizing effects of zinc and copper were recognized. The optimum composition estimated from the point of mechanical properties is copper 16 to 17%, zinc 6 to 7%, palladium 20% and silver 56 to 58%.Alloys of this composition have the tensile strength of 47±2kgf/mm2 and the elongation of 16 to 25% at quenching treatment and the tensile strength of 55±3kgf/mm2 and the elongation of 6 to 15% at ageing. However, the microstructure of alloys containing more than 10% of copper and more than 5% of zinc consists of Pd-Zn phase, Ag α phase and Ag-Cu eutectoid and when immersing in the 0.1% Na2S solution, a micro dot-shaped black change generates.
