Abstract

In this study, we discussed the latest policies for city-regions and spatial unit for regional planning in Korea, and overviewed the knowledge exchange activities as associated infrastructure in the knowledge economy. An analytical methodology, network analysis of joint patent was used. From analysis, it was found out that spatial unit for regional planning and the existing spatial distribution of knowledge exchange are different. In addition, the typology of spatial distribution was also found according to the characteristics of each cluster. In the future, based on these results, considering the reasonable setting of the regional units, the point of view about regional governance and planning which is better adopted wide-area network-based activities is desirable.
