Description

The dimensional changes of three types of alginate impression material in the environments (air of 50% and 100% ralative humidity and water) were measured by means of an electronic micrometer using a non-pressure method. Four factors, A) temperature during setting, B) mixing time, C) W/P ratio and D) impression-removal time were selected. The effect of the atmosphere during setting was also examined.
The temperature during setting was the most effective factor in all types of materials and under all of the different environments. Marked shrinkage was found in the specimen hardened in the water at 37℃ up to 15 minutes from the start of measurement. The linear coefficients of thermal expansion of the alginates differed by product within the range of 1.1 to 3.2 (×10-4/℃).
The results of the experiments suggested that sufficient consideration should be given to the temperature conditions for the accuracy test of the stone-die conbined with the impression materials, since the temperature during setting was found to have the greatest effect on the dimensional stability of alginate impression materials.
