Abstract

This paper tries to clarify the logical structure of the definition of the Japanese word of 'Machzukuri,' or 'community building' or 'community planning' in English. After the basic logical discussion about the definition of the technical term in general, the author makes the logical analysis of the discourses concerning the definition of Machizukuri presented by 4 scholars: Uzo Nishiyama, Akira Tamura, Shigeru Sato and Akira Sawamura. The paper is concluded with a presentation of a hypothetical framework of the definition of Machizukuri in terms of the 'dimension' and 'broad-sense/narrow-sense' of the definition, which would logically locate all the Machizukuri cases.
