Abstract

The purpose of this study is to deepen our understanding of the characters of the British civic society movement in the formative era of the British modern city planning from 1900 to 1930, by clarifying discourses on civic societies and works of leading civic societies at the time. Some discourses on civic societies in the journals related to town planning revealed that the essential roles of civic societies were supplements for governmental town planning and promoters of decentralizations in the British original context. The histories of the Liverpool City Guild, the London Society and the Birmingham Civic Society suggested that transitions of relations between local governments and civic societies in those 30 years were determining factors of their characters.
