Abstract

Given a road network laid out in a square grid pattern and a set of origin-destination pairs, various routes of the same length may be considered. The least number of crossings of traffic flow at intersections that can be achieved by routes of the shortest distance is of interest. Vehicles stopping for red lights and reducing speed in front of an intersection are modeled as ``traffic flow crossing'' in this study. We construct a theoretical model to treat spatial distributions of traffic flow crossings in a road network given by an n n square grid with uniform demand for each node pair, and show the dependency of the result on routing strategies.
