Abstract

Many local cities are trying to shape compact city in an age of depopulation. This paper examines actual change of the population and the retail floor through five local cities case study. Using mesh date, the author investigated areas where the population and the retail floor were changing. The results are as follows: 1) The population of the central city area was decreasing strongly, but the retail floor of the central city area was increasing slightly. and 2) The new districts where the population and the retail floor accumulated are located in certain urban areas except central city area. These two things show the necessity of the policy that enables coexistence of the central city area and the new districts.
