East-Mukojima in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, is a heterogeneous area with traditional factories and houses, which has been regarded as one of the most problematic areas from disaster prevention and thus undergone rapid transformation activities. However, such transformation activities have resulted in the loss vernacular landscapes of the area. This study analyzed residents' attachments to vernacular landscapes by interviews focusing on their life history to discuss an effective methodology for the preservation of the landscapes. The analysis showed that their experiences related to a building as well as its exterior appearance had a strong influence on their feeling of attachment. The results of this study suggest the importance of preserving the functions of buildings as well as their external appearance.
