Abstract

We are increasingly aware of the complexity of the interactive systems which support life on this planet. The system Sun-Atmosphere-Hydrosphere-Geosphere-Biosphere controls our environment, and fluctuates on many time scales. Changes in all these systems change the environment but at present the dominant agent forcing change is human activity, and such activities increase in their effects with population. We must understand the life support system. We must understand what human population can survive well on Earth given present technologies. All humans on Earth must be educated about the fundamental aspects of our life support system. Perhaps the greatest question facing all involved in science and technology today is-can we produce the food-fibre-materials-energy which will be needed by 10 billion humans next century without destruction of the life support system?
