Abstract

In this paper, the origin of varve-like banding structures found in bottom sediments of lake Abashiri-ko have been explored using microscopic study, X-ray diffraction data and XRF analysis data among others. The banding structures of the lake are visible in different tones of grey and are different from the varves described in Japan. A pair of band is obviously formed in ten to twelve months. Bands are of various thickness representing geological beds that include three to fourteen laminations per bed. Though each band consists of diatoms, felsic-to micaceous-clay and ferrugenous minerals, but the distinctive materials could not be found in the bands. According to chemical and XRF analyses of the bands, there are distinct chemical domains while several bands are considered together. It is difficult to find out annual chemical fluctuations using a band, but the chemical domains composed with several bands are of five to ten years of resolution and will be expected to represent the chemical change of the environment in Hokkaido region of 5-10 years' periodicity.
