Abstract

There is few on-site seismographic data at each damaged site, when we consider why each of the damage was caused on the large earthquake. The author examined every mark of damaged gravestones to reconstruct the on-site movement of the Noto Hanto Earthquake in 2007. The marks are distinguished into the percussion and scratched marks, and the latter is further distinguished into the accreted, burnished and grooved marks. According to the distinguished types of the marks and cutting order of particular marks, the observed marks are classified into 23 relative time-serial stages. Motion of the median point of the moved part of the gravestone is reconstructed with the marks of each stage. According to the result of the motional analysis, a short-period and strong vertical motion with slight NW-SE horizontal motion is dominant at the earlier stages, and large SW-NE horizontal motion is dominant at the later stages, and the fall of the part of the gravestone is caused by the strong northward movement. The movement of earlier stages is plausibly considered to correspond to the P-wave and that of later stages to the S-wave. According to the relationship between the movement of the gravestones and particle motion of seismic ground motion at Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, they seem to roughly accord with each other, and the same movement as the strong movement of N-S directions occurred at 8.35 sec. after the main shock at Wajima City seems to destroy the gravestones.
