Abstract

On July 15th 1888, a phreatic eruption occurred on the north side of Bandai volcano. After this eruption, Kobandai-san collapsed. The debris flow went down mostly in the north-eastward direction, however some traveled down on the south-eastward side. When the debris flow reached the base, it changed into a mud flow. The photographs taken at this time are at the Fukushima Prefectural Library, the Fukushima Prefectural Museum, the National Science Museum, the Imperial Household Agency and Gakushuin the University. In November, 2007, author Sato discovered nine photographs of the eruption in 1888 at the Imperial Household Agency. These photographs had deteriorated significantly and the quality was very poor. For this reason, the author Chiba restored these photographs. Chiba discovered the position where the pictures were taken. As a result, important data was obtained in regards to the growth process of Hibara lake. Moreover, we now know the state of the debris flow and mud flow of the collapse in each region. In addition, the direction and size of the blast were projected from the degree of destruction of near by houses. Chiba was able to guess the identity of the photographers. The photographer and photography number of sheets were thought to be as follows: Endo Rikuro took seven photographs, W. K. Burton took one and an unknown person took one. Through this discovery, Chiba found twenty-eight more photographs taken by Endo Rikuro, twenty-one of which were at the Fukushima Prefectural Library, and seven at the Imperial Household Agency.
