説明

Purpose: Recently, contact lens (CL) users have been increasing. Particularly in pediatric patients, there is a tendency of using CLs at an earlier age. On the other hand, no clear standard of CL user's age has been established yet. Here we reported the current situation for CL prescription for pediatric patients at the Nishikasai Inouye Eye Clinic.
Subjects and Methods: Subjects were 158 children from 10-15 years of age who were prescribed with CLs at our clinic between January 2008 and June 2011. Sex, age, refraction at the time of CL prescription, reason for CL use and the family history of CL use were retrospectively investigated.
Results: The average age of the subjects was 12.96 years. Of 158, 53 (34%) were boys and 105 (66%) were girls. The average refraction at the time of CL prescription was
- 3.87 D for the right eye and - 3.77 D for the left eye. The reasons for obtaining a CL prescription included "to do sports" (62%), "cosmetic reason" (16%), "suffering from high myopia or anisometropia" (10%), "other reasons" (4%) and "unknown" (8%). Regarding the family history of CL use, 59% indicated CL use by other family member(s), 13.9% showed no CL use in the family and 27.1% indicated unknown.
Conclusion: Glasses are the first choice for refractive correction while CL is becoming another option due to the diverse lifestyles of children nowadays. When prescribing CL for pediatric patients, it is essential to explain the advantages and disadvantages of CL use to both the patient and the parents, to confirm their knowledge of CL as a medical devise and to ensure that the patient has sufficient practice of safe CL use.
