説明

Purpose: To investigate the characteristics of the Welch Allyn® SureSight™ Autorefractor (SureSight), a new handheld autorefractor.
Subjects and method: Among children who visited Aichi children's Medical and Health Center during April, 2004, those who could be refracted by the SureSight, The Righton Retinomax K-plus2 portable autrefractor (Retinomax), and the Canon RK-5 table-mounted autorefractor (RK-5) were evaluated. Either tropicamid or cyclopentolate hydrochloride was administered to obtain cycloplegia. They underwent cycloplegic refraction using the three autorefractor. The SureSight values with reliability of 6 or larger were accepted. Friedman testing was used to analyze the data.
Results: Two hundred and nineteen eyes of 136 children (mean age 4.8 years old, range 0 to 10) completed the study. The noncycloplegied readings of the SureSight and the Retinomax were more myopic than the RK-5 (P<0.01). There was no statistical between the cyclopleged readings of the SureSight and the RK-5. Of the children younger than three, 88.2percent were successfully refracted by the SureSight.
Conclusion: The SureSight is useful to obtain refractive data of children, especially for younger than three years old. In using for children in noncyclopleged state, excessive values tending to myopia should be noticed.
