Effects of Alkali-Earth and Rare Earth Metal Fluorides Additions on Magnetic Properties of W-Type Sr Ferrite Powders

The magnetic properties of Sr[Zn(LiFe)0.5]Fe16O27 W-type ferrites in powder forms with metal fluorides, were studied, in pursuing the possibilities of obtaining the bonded magnets with higher coercive force (iHc) and maximum energy products ((BH)max). It was found that the addition of alkali-earth metal fluorides to the system improved the iHc and magnetisation intensity measured at 1200 kA/m(σ1200). Especially the sample doped with 2.0 mass% SrF2 gave σ1200 of 8.55×10−5 Wb·m/kg and iHc of 224 kA/m. On the other hand, those doped with 2.0 mass% LaF3 gave σ1200 of 8.29×10−5 Wb·m/kg and iHc=208 kA/m.<BR>The best magnetic properties obtained in the present study were σ1200=9.05×10−5 Wb·m/kg, iHc=208 kA/m and (BH)max=18 kJ/m3 for the sample with 2.0 mass% SrF3 aligned magnetically and annealed at 1000°C for 2 h. These values are comparable to those of the powders for M-type ferrite bonded magnets.
