Description

In this report 109 infants with Esotropia who wore prism glasses were examined from October, 1978 to May, 1996. 60 were treated with prism glasses only. 49 cases had surgery and wore prism glasses before and after the surgery. As a result of the prism treatment, satisfactory binocular vision was acquired and maintained. In 43 cases (45.7%), the deviation angle was reduced over 10 prisms throughout the period. In 9 (9.6%) of those cases, surgery was not needed and the required prism power was gradually reduced and finally eliminated. When surgery was performed, a correction of 10 prisms lower than what would conventionally be used was applied and prism glasses were worn both prior to and after surgery. With this method the possibility of post-operative Exotropia was prevented.
