Description

We evaluated 115 patients under 10 years old with hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia who had spherical equivalent difference between two eyes of 2.0D and more, astigmatism of 1.0D and less and no manifest strabismus. At the start of the therapy, their average age, refraction of amblyopic eye and degree of anisometropia were 6.4 years, +6.2D and 4.0D, respectively. One hundred eight (93.9%) obtained visual improvement of 1.0 or better. The duration of their recovery to 1.0 ranged from 2 months to 3.5 years (average 1.1 years). By a linear regression model, there were significant correlation between recovery duration and the following factors: refraction of amblyopic eye (p<0.05). degree of anisometropia (p<0.01) and initial visual acuity of amblyopic eye (p<0.01), except initial age. Patients with final visual acuity of less than 1.0 was statistically older than those with final visual acuity of 1.0 or better (p<0.05). Hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia showed good visual prognosis, but a therapy of longer duration must be required to improve the vision of the patients with the defect, related to refraction of amblyopic eye, degree of anisometropia and initial visual acuity of amblyopic eye. Finally, the borderline of reaching 1.0 or better by 1.5 years was +7.0D in refraction of amblyopic eye, 5.0D in degree of anisometropia, and 0.3∼0.4 in visual acuity of amblyopic eye.
