Description

Among 102 cases with laryngeal carcinomas treated at our clinic from April 1984 to March 1999, 11 were cases of multiple primary carcinomas and there was one case of quadruple carcinomas.
Multiple primary carcinomas were often found in the multicentric zone, the oral, pharynx, larynx, upper digestive tracts and the lung areas.
Second primary carcinomas were sometimes found in the lung, and the prognosis of the cases with the lung carcinomas was worse than with other carcinomas. Thus, lung CT and bronchoscopy are considered essential in cases of laryngeal carcinomas for the early detection of multiple primary carcinomas. Second primary carcinomas were found to occur at high rates as carcinomas related to smoking, suggesting that smoking is related to the promotor of carcinogenesis as a risk factor.
We consider education regarding not only decreased smoking, but also chemoprevention to be important. Long term follow-up and early diagnosis are indispensable.
