Abstract

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) was examined in 34 patients who were diagnosed as having central-origin vertigo by means of the vestibular function test.
Latencies of the first and fifth waves of the ABR and the interval between the first and fifth waves were measured and comparison of these ABR findings with the results of the neuro-otological examinations was performed from a clinical view points.
The findings are as follows:
1) In patients with positive-gaze nystagmus, which suggested central-origin, the interval between the first and fifth waves of the ABR and the latencies of the first and fifth waves were slightly prolonged.
2) In the patients with direction-fixed head positional nystagmus, the interval between the first and fifth waves and the latency of the fifth wave were slightly prolonged.
3) In patients with an abnormally depressed pattern in the optokinetic nystagmus test, the interval between the first and fifth waves and the latency of the first and fifth waves were significantly prolonged.
