Abstract

86 cases of parotid tumors treated in the department of Otolaryngology, Kyoto University, during the past ten years were reviewed under the classification of the World Health Organization (W. H. O. 1972) and statistically analyzed according to age, sex, symptoms, tumors, treatments, and prognosis, spot-lighting so-called histopathologically low grade malignancy cases.
Of the 86 parotid tumors, 56 were benign and 30 were malignant. Five low-grade malignancy cases were found among the 30 malignant cases. The most prevalent tumor among the benign tumors was Pleomorphic adenoma (32 cases), while Adenocarcinoma and Epidermoid carcinoma were the most prevalent among the malignant tumors (8 cases/each).
Symptoms such as spontaneous pain, facial palsy, and adhesion were found to be significant for the preoperative diagnosis of malignancy.
The five histopathologically low-grade malignancy cases were found to have shown benign clinical features and were treated and operated under the diagnosis of benign tumor. However, the prognosis of these tumors were found to be good even though these tumors were histopathologically malignant.
